Program Highlights

The compressed, two-semester program Construction Skills program will prepare you for employment in the construction sector. You will be trained in hand and power tool usage, carpentry/framing techniques, blueprint reading, electricity basics, welding, masonry basics, safety, WHMIS, and applied construction mathematics. Completion of this certificate will also prepare you to pursue an apprenticeship in a variety of construction-related trades.  

What it Takes to Succeed

To be employed in construction you need to:

  • be able to follow instructions carefully and work independently
  • maintain safety at the site
  • be able to multi-task
  • adhere to industry-approved standards and relevant codes
  • understand the basic processes and phases of construction projects
  • complete projects according to blueprint specifications.

In addition, the ability to practice professional conduct on-site, and communicate and work effectively in a team environment will be key to your success. You will have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate these skills throughout the program. You must also be ready and able to work in a construction environment in all kinds of conditions.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be prepared for work on residential, industrial and commercial construction sites, performing entry level tasks on projects such as:

  • residential framing
  • renovation carpentry
  • maintenance carpentry
  • finish carpentry
  • roofing
  • insulation installation
  • exterior siding installation.

Minimum Admission Requirements

OSSD with the majority of credits at the Workplace (E) level, including English.

When Workplace (E) is the minimum course level for admission, (C) and (U/C) courses are also accepted.

 

Mature Students
If you are 19 years of age or older before classes start, and you do not possess an OSSD, you can write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test to assess your eligibility for admission.
