Program Highlights

In the Esthetician program, you will learn how to provide a range of treatments, such as manicures and pedicures, make-up, skin care, body treatments and waxing techniques. Employment prospects are strong for people trained as qualified estheticians as more people are seeking treatments to maintain a youthful appearance, reduce stress and improve health and wellness. Here's what's special about our program:

  • The program is fast-tracked to enable you to enter the esthetics industry sooner - you will take the equivalent of two years of study in just 12 months.
  • We have our own, on-campus, state of the art spa: "Essentials, the Spa at Fleming" where all students do their placements
  • Only top of the line, professional products are used in both our teaching and practice
  • Our spa features a full shower to provide you with the opportunity to both practice and experience the latest in spa body treatments

You will study during daytime courses in three consecutive semesters, beginning in September and graduating in August. You obtain increasing hands-on experience in each semester by providing esthetic services to clients in the on-site, fully equipped spa.

Work Experience

You will practice your skills, improve your techniques, and learn how to offer excellent customer service in our on-campus spa. With one state-of-the-art work station for every two students on average, you can be sure that you will have the opportunity to really gain in confidence as you practice current methods and techniques in use in the field. You will work directly with clients for approximately 10 weeks total throughout the program.

Career Opportunities

We will assist you in fulfilling your career aspirations as our faculty have strong business relationships within all aspects of the esthetics industry. The demand for qualified estheticians is high and expected to continue to grow. Career opportunities include working in destination spas, resorts, cruise ships, health centres, and clinics.  With experience, you may choose to open your own business. Our program is gaining a strong reputation. For example, Ste. Anne's Spa (one of Canada's top ten spas) currently employs seven of our graduates.

Minimum Admission Requirements

OSSD with the majority of credits at the Workplace (E) level, including English.

When Workplace (E) is the minimum course level for admission, (C) and (U/C) courses are also accepted.

Mature Students
If you are 19 years of age or older before classes start, and you do not possess an OSSD, you can write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test to assess your eligibility for admission.

Semester 1

Business and Workplace Essentials

Course Number: BUSN104

This course examines trends, issues and challenges that impact Canadian business and organizations. It will introduce students to the different internal and external elements of an organization and help them to understand the context in which a business operates. Students will explore themes in business and the workplace such as technology, ethics and social responsibility, and the significance of small business. An overview of business functions, organizational structure and behaviour, including management, will be examined. Through an understanding of Canadian business, students will gain further insight into the Canadian workplace, and, as well, the specific work environment that they will be part of as graduates of the Esthetician Program. Specifically students will have the opportunity to learn about jobs in their field of study and to explore the factors that impact on their work satisfaction, performance and job readiness. Students will be introduced to case based learning and a strategic decision making model and apply this theory by analyzing a business situation related to their field of studies.

College Communications for the Helping Professions

Course Number: COMM079

Communications for the Helping Professions, a mandatory Communications course, focuses on improving reading and writing skills through a number of assignments related to the helping professions. Students will demonstrate skills in summary and essay writing as well as research techniques, including appropriate documentation of sources. The principles of style, structure, content, and mechanics constitute the overall framework of the course.

Hair Removal

Course Number: COSM007

This is an introductory course in hair removal. Topics include a comprehensive study of the structure and anatomy of hair growth and hair removal techniques used today in modern salons. The basics of chemistry are also explained. During the course, students learn the most up to date waxing methods, proper care, operation and safety of waxing equipment, facial and eye shape techniques and proper hygiene.

Introductory Computing

Course Number: COMP345

Working in the Windows XP environment, this computer course introduces the student to computer basics (computer terminology, e-mail, file management) and the application and use of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software using Microsoft Office 2007. Through the extensive use of hands-on activities, students will gain sufficient knowledge and experience to make productive use of computers as a tool in both college and workplace environments. Students will have the opportunity to attain the International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) Start Certification if they attain 75% or more on each of the four ICDL Start Certification tests.

Manicure Level I

Manicures are one of the most requested services in the salon industry. A sound knowledge of this basic service and how it relates to other esthetic services will provide students with a solid learning foundation. The condition of the nail, like that of the skin, reflects the general health of the body.

Pedicure Level I

As one of the most requested services in the esthetics industry, students learn how to provide clients with a professional pedicure and apply cosmetic lotions to feet and legs to improve circulation and provide relaxation. Study of nail and foot disorders will be provided, along with esthetic treatments that can be used. Appropriate sanitation of the salon equipment is also a key outcome in this course.

Practical Salon/Spa Experience I

Students will practice introductory esthetic techniques on class members within a College spa/salon setting. In later semesters, the students will provide esthetic services to the public. This practical experience reinforces skills and knowledge gained in class. The esthetics salon/spa prepares students for future jobs in the esthetic field where punctuality, cleanliness, and professionalism are highly valued. Students will be introduced to the daily activities of an esthetics business and will actively participate in all tasks involved in day-to-day operations. They will be responsible for booking appointments, performing services (learned in this semester), cleaning, and managing all aspects of an esthetic business.

Communications for Customer Service Excellence

The skills taught in this course are critical for success whether you are in business for yourself or employed in other professional environments. You will take part in activities to enhance interpersonal skills to effectively address a variety of customer service issues. This course will help you as a professional to increase and maintain clientele through providing extraordinary customer service - and help increase business revenues and reputation in the community.

Computer Skills for Esthetics

This course will teach students the importance of computers in the spa industry. Basic computerized bookkeeping, scheduling, inventory records, payroll, and the importance of client databases will be taught as an essential skill within the esthetics field.

Introductory Human Biology

This course will outline the basic functions of the human body in the context of esthetic treatment. Topics will include human biological, physiological and anatomical systems. Skin & Body Treatments

Course Number: COSM008

Students will practice a variety of advanced facial treatments using electrical equipment, (facial steamer, high frequency, galvanic) demonstrating a sound knowledge of the theory of the equipment and skin, meeting industry expectations. The student will practice introduction to basic body treatments (dry brushing and aromatherapy) and relaxation massage, demonstrating an understanding of basic anatomy of the body, and be able to perform and adjust treatments to meet client's needs.

Skin Care Level II

Course Number: COSM002

The student will use advanced techniques in facial treatments (including various deep-cleansing methods) and operate skin/ esthetics equipment (facial steamer, brushing machine, high frequency), and manual extraction. Students will study the muscles of the face and neck for the purpose of skin treatments. They will learn advanced skin treatment techniques, masque therapies, and product applications enabling them to perform and adjust facials for clients and to meet industry expectations. The chemistry and application of various product lines will be studied as well.

Towards Optimum Health

Course Number: GNED052

This course will provide students with the tools they need to achieve and maintain optimum health and longevity. The emphasis will be on avoidance of chronic diseases such as heart disease and stroke, cancer and diabetes through sound nutrition and therapeutic supplementation. Healthy living techniques such as exercise, stress management and the power of positive thinking will also be covered. Each student will develop a healthy eating plan as well as a personal fitness and stress management plan.

The makeup artist provides a valuable service to clients who want to learn to apply makeup artistically. You will learn how to apply makeup to enhance a client's good features while diminishing unflattering ones.
