Peterborough ON – (March 7, 2017) – Twelve teams will battle it out in the ultimate fitness challenge for the First Responders Cup taking place on Saturday, March 11 at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre.

Hosted by students in Fleming College’s Pre-Service Firefighter, Paramedic, Customs Border Services and Police Foundations programs, the event features six-person co-ed teams that are given eight different first responder fitness challenges to complete over eight hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The team with the fastest cumulative time over all eight circuits will win the cup.

The event is a fundraiser for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Branch and has already raised $3,500 and counting.

Members of the public are encouraged to come out and watch throughout the day. Representatives from the CMHA will be on-hand to speak with participants and spectators and Canadian Blood Services will be there to provide blood typing services.

“We chose the CMHA because we went through the mental health class (within our program) and were shown how common Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is in the policing profession. We understand that there is a negative stigma around this topic and we wanted to be able to help bring awareness to our community and help get rid of the negative stigma so that people can get the help they need,” said Rachel Clegg and Kelsey Spier, fourth-semester students in the Police Foundations program.
