Peterborough ON – (May 12, 2017) – Fleming College’s School of Trades and Technology will host a record number of Grade 7 and 8 students from the three regional school boards for skilled trades camps over the next three weeks (May 15 – June 1).

According to Jan Watson, KTTC Employment Market and Student Success Specialist, in total, 270 students will be visiting the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus to participate in the camps.

“The camps present an opportunity for elementary/intermediate students to try out various skilled trades through hands-on activities – namely, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding and culinary. While the opportunity provides a fun-filled learning experience, our ultimate objective is to encourage the students to consider the trades as a feasible, rewarding career option,” said Ms. Watson.

The School of Trades and Technology, in partnership with Trillium Lakelands District School Board, is hosting 60 students for the “Tech It Out” skilled trades camps during the week of May 15-19. One group of 30 students (both boys and girls) will attend May 15-17 while the second group of 30 students will attend May 17-19. These are three-day, two-night camps. Participants will stay at the Sutherland Campus residences during the camp.

The camps are filled with activities related to the trades. Students will spend their time building and assembling a comprehensive project that they will take home with them at the end of camp. They will also visit Fleming’s culinary lab one night to cook their own dinner and eat in Fulford’s, the campus restaurant.

Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board students will participate in skilled trades workshops May 23-26. Thirty students will attend each day throughout the week.  Participants will work in both the carpentry and plumbing labs to build a camp chair and a copper vase using a variety of hand tools.

And for the first time, Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board students will participate in a girls-only trades camp May 30 to June 1. The “Jill of All Trades” camp will host 30 female students each day. Students will work in the carpentry and plumbing labs and will leave at the end of the day with two projects.
