Make an impact

Our school is dedicated to preparing you for a career in which people matter. Here you will learn the skills to provide guidance, comfort, safety and expertise to make a positive impact on your community. All of our programs are rooted in extensive practical training. In your program you will reinforce theory with hands-on experience in classrooms, dedicated labs, simulation spaces, clinics or training facilities as well as clinical or field placements. Our faculty are passionate about ensuring you graduate with competence and confidence as you embark on your new career.

Programs in our School combine a significant amount of practical experiences with theoretical knowledge where you will have extensive time to build your skills in a number of different ways.

Many programs in the School of Health and Community Services take advantage of Fleming’s state-of-the-art Simulation Centre, which includes a fully immersive space with 360-degree projections and customizable interactive touchpoints, where students practice scenarios they will encounter in the real world. The Simulation Centre also features high fidelity mannequins, a high tech security hub and asset interview rooms. Many programs have dedicated lab spaces or clinics, such as a pharmacy lab, massage clinic, spa, nursing lab, biotechnology lab, court room, and off-site firefighter training facility. The majority of our programs also include placements that can take place locally, nationally or even internationally. Placements may require Non-Academic Requirements to attend the workplace.

You can find the NARs for your program as well as the submission deadline on the Non-Academic Requirements website.

Kyla Edgas - Biotechnology Advanced '21
Fleming's Biotechnology Advanced program gave me pretty much every single skill and experience I needed for my career as Laboratory Technician. Coming out of the program you are able to have about 800 or so hours of hands on in-lab experience. And no other college could match the 600 hour placement portion of the program. I did my entire placement with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in Ottawa. The last 3 months of my placement I spent in the Federal Surge Laboratory that tests COVID-19 samples. Here I had the opportunity to help with the setup of a brand new lab, alongside learning their testing methods. I am extremely thankful that I was hired on as a full time employee during my placement. Kyla Edgas - Biotechnology Advanced '21
Claire Belding - Mental Health and Addictions Worker
I chose this program because I have always been an ally of people struggling with Mental Health and Addictions and I knew my passion could be turned into helping others. I was continually supported both educationally and personally. I was allowed to be vulnerable and really allowed to challenge myself to grow. The faculty have a tremendous passion for fostering growth for future professionals in the field of Human Services. My placement experience with Elizabeth Fry Society was incredible. It's a place that would allow me to grow and develop and would support me every step of the way. I felt like I had found my people. Claire Belding - Mental Health and Addictions Worker
I have had an unforgettable 2 years. All the courses gave me with not only remarkable hands-on experiences but also essential preparations to apply to the real world. And without my professors and peers I would not be where I am today. The more I dive into this growing field in the pharmaceutical industry, the more passionate I become. I am now a Regulated Healthcare Professional, but this is just the start of my journey. Tram Cao - International student, Vietnam, Pharmacy Technician '20
